Alessia Tropea

Alessia Tropea got her Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences in 2009 and the PhD (Doctor Europaeus) in “Chemical Sciences” in 2013, discussing a thesis titled   “Second generation bioethanol from agro-food wastes-Cell wall sugar fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae“. During Doctorate, carried out for 18 months at the Institute of Food Research, Norwich, UK, she had been working mainly on bioethanol production and on food waste valorization for obtaining added value products, by carrying out controlled fermentation processes, applying selected microorganisms.

After doctorate, Dr Tropea held Post-Doc positions in Fermentation Chemistry at University of Messina, working on second generation biofuel production by both separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF). Moreover, she had been working on single cell protein (SCP) and biological molecules production through liquid and solid-state fermentation.

From 2016 to 2021 she has been working as Innovation Promoter at the Technology Transfer Office of the University of Messina.

Since October 2022 she is assistant professor in Fermentation Chemistry (SSD CHIM/11) in the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences, at University of Messina. Her research is focused on fermentation processes implementation for obtaining molecules of biological and industrial interest. Currently she is working on microbial pigments production, by selecting microorganisms, suitable as food/feed supplementation and for third-generation solar cells implementation.

To date she is co-author of 20 scientific publications in indexed journals and of many contributions (oral and poster) presented at national and international congresses.

Dr. Tropea is member of the Topical Advisory Panel of Fermentation, Topic Collection Editor and Guest Editor for Fermentation journal, and for International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
